TL;DR
Hiring Rosemary Meran as our doula was the single most impactful decision we made during pregnancy. From helping me conquer my fear of birth to being by my side through labor, and supporting us postpartum, she offered unwavering emotional, physical, and informational care.
Rosemary wasnât just a doulaâshe was my anchor through every contraction, every fear, and every what-if. I canât imagine doing it without her.
If youâre in NYC and thinking about working with a doulaâespecially if youâre considering hypnotherapy or trauma-informed birth prepâRosemary is the one.
đ Whatâs a Doula?
A doula is a trained professional who provides emotional, physical, and informational support before, during, and after birth. Unlike midwives or doctors, doulas donât deliver babies or offer medical careâbut they play a powerful role in helping you feel calm, confident, and supported.
Whether you're planning an unmedicated birth, a scheduled C-section, or just want a steady hand to guide you through the unknown, a doula offers personalized care and advocacy every step of the way.

𤯠How I Found Her
Finding a doula was more overwhelming than I expected. I was drowning in bios that all sounded the same: "calm, nurturing, grounded" â but I needed someone who could actually walk me through birth options and help me deal with serious anxiety.
I found Boober, a platform that connects expecting parents with vetted doulas, and we were matched with six. Two stood out, but Rosemary blew everyone else away. Her calm presence and precise, thoughtful answers gave me an immediate sense of trust. She was a clear yes.
đĄ Why I Knew I Needed a Doula
There were several reasons I was drawn to the idea of having a doula. First and foremost, I was terrified of giving birthâwhether vaginal or C-section. I couldn't decide without really knowing what each really meant and what it would look like.
I needed someone who could walk me through all my optionsâthe actual process, risks, recovery, and impact on the baby. I also knew there was no guarantee my OB would be there during delivery, and having a familiar face felt non-negotiable for something so personal and intense.
I wasnât looking for someone to push a specific agendaâI needed someone warm, open, informed, and calming. Not overly chipper. Not rigid. Just real and grounded. And during our Zoom interview, despite my irritable first-trimester mood swings, Rosemary made me feel lighter, calmer, and like I could finally breathe. Thatâs how I knew.
At some point, my husband and I started joking that Rosemary was our Gandalfâwise, grounding, and always showing up right when we needed her most. She guided us through pregnancy like a true wizard of birth. đ§ââď¸â¨
đ§ââď¸ Preparing for Birth: Mind, Body, and Soul
From day one, Rosemary offered something rare: flexibility. Many doulas offer one Zoom, one in-person visit, and leave after an hour post-birth. Rosemary told us: "I'm here as much as you need me." And she meant it.
đ§ Mentally
We used her Fear-Free Childbirth⢠program, hypnotherapy sessions that helped me reframe my anxieties and let go of fears I didnât even realize I was holding. She shared real videos of unmedicated births, epidurals, and C-sections so I could really understand each experience. For the first time, I felt preparedâlike I had choices that I really understood. I ended up choosing unmedicated birth, and yes, I was actually excited for contractions.
(Unfortunately, my baby girl had other plansâshe was way too comfortable and arrived 11 days late. So, we needed an induction.)
đ Emotionally
The hypnotherapy sessions were a game-changer. Some sessions were intense and healing; others were light and joyful, including visualizing my daughter before she was born. My husband had one session, which helped him bond with our baby before she arrived.
𩺠Physically
Trimester-specific yoga, advice on what to eat (hello, dates), and a gentle "skip the raspberry leaf tea until postpartum" recommendation helped me feel prepared and in tune with my body. Everything was thoughtful and backed by both research and her lived experience.
đ¤ Questions to Ask When Interviewing a Doula
These are the questions I found most helpfulâand theyâre worth asking no matter your birth preferences:
How many births have you supported?
(Understand their experience and comfort with different birth scenarios.)How many families do you support at one time?
(Helps gauge how available and focused theyâll be.)What happens if youâre unavailable when I go into labor?
Do you work with a backup doula, and can we meet her ahead of time?
(Peace of mind for unpredictable timing.)What does your support look like once labor beginsâor if Iâm being induced?
(Clarifies their involvement and communication style.)Can you walk me through your overall support process and how flexible you are with sessions or visits?
(Get a sense of structure vs. personalization.)Have you worked with my chosen hospital, birth center, or home birth setting?
(Familiarity with your setting can ease coordination.)What happens if youâre unavailable when I go into labor? Do you work with a backup doula? How do you support partners and co-parents during labor and postpartum?
(Important for shared preparation and emotional support.)Do you offer postpartum care, and what does that include?
(Find out how long theyâll be in your corner after birth.)
âł The Birth: Calm in the Chaos
Rosemary arrived as soon as the induction started and stayed with us the entire journey. She helped me advocate for myself from the moment we got thereâmaking sure everything still resembled the calm, unmedicated experience I envisioned.
She helped us transform a sterile hospital room into a spa-like oasis. She kept me focused. She supported my husband so he could support me. And she stayed the entire time.
And when it came time to push? Rosemary was literally holding up one of my legs while my husband held the other. They were both my biggest cheerleadersâalongside my doctorâcoaching me through each push with strength, encouragement, and love.
đĽ Two Key Moments
1. đ¨The Emergency Rush
Twice, we nearly faced emergency C-sections. One triggered a "panic button" with 30 people rushing in. Thanks to Rosemaryâs prep, my husband knew exactly how to shield me from the chaos.
2. đThe Epidural Call
When a doctor-in-training came to do the epidural, Rosemary had prepped my husband to ask for a fully trained doctor. She also insisted that he be allowed to stay in the room with meâciting that it was illegal to force him out. That decision may have saved me from complications.
đś Postpartum Support That Actually Helps
Rosemary doesnât disappear after the baby arrives. She stayed with us at the hospital until we were ready for her to leave and ensured my baby had a good latch before heading out.
Then she came to our home for three days of postpartum support. This is when she really became like family to us. We asked her to:
Observe and guide us as we cared for our newborn
Help with night feedings and soothing so we could rest
Teach my husband how to bottle feed and comfort the baby
Support us emotionally and practically during the transition
She also:
Walked us through and assisted with our daughterâs first sponge bath
Gave us tips on how to properly put on diapers to avoid blowouts and make the process gentler for our baby
Suggested nighttime tweaks to make evenings smoother and keep our baby calm
Taught us how to use a baby carrier confidently and safely
Offered to help with light household tasks like tidying, laundry, and cookingâlittle things that made a big difference
She helped monitor breastfeeding, suggested feeding rhythms, and encouraged us not to rush into pumping or building a stash. Her trauma-informed, no-pressure, hands-on support was exactly what we needed.
đ A Lasting Impact
Rosemary made such a huge impact on our family that we asked her to write in our babyâs growth book. A few days later, we received a handwritten letter on beautiful stationary, with the most heartfelt message for our daughter.
She will always be part of our familyâs story.
đż Did Rosemary Influence How I Want to Parent?
Absolutely. Over those three days, we had so many meaningful conversations about her travels and her own parenting journey. She shared stories of raising her kids in a bilingual household, supporting their interests, and fostering independence and curiosity.
Her perspective had a huge impact on how we now want to raise our daughterâfrom how we approach language to how weâll support her passions and growth as a human being.
đĽ If I Could Do It Again...
I wouldâve reached out to a doula soonerâor started hypnotherapy even earlier. I didnât realize how much of my fear around birth came from stories Iâd absorbed as a kid until I started unpacking them. That mental shift made everything easier.
Having someone like Rosemary guide me through that internal work made all the differenceânot just in how I gave birth, but in how I stepped into motherhood.
